Summiting Mauna Loa: Mauna Loa spews out more lava in a week than Kilauea does in an entire year. Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since 1843, and as recently as 1984. Even Mauna Loa last erupted in the 1980’s, it’s still steaming today. Mauna Lao’s summit caldera measures 4 miles long by 1.5 miles wide.
