Lanikai Beach is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. It is in Kailua on the windward (east) side of O’ahu. What makes it special is its lack of commercial development–there are no services at all. If you drive south from Kailua on HI-72, you’ll pass by Waimanalo and Makapu’u with amazing views of Rabbit and Kaohikaipu Islands and ocean attractions like Sandy Beach and Halona Blowhole. Continuing south toward Hawaii Kai and Honolulu you will find Hanauma Bay and then there is a turn off to a peninsula in a subdivision area with a beach at the end called Koko Kai Mini Beach Park, also known as China Walls. We enjoyed watching the sunset here over Diamond Head, Waikiki, and Honolulu. There were many college students enjoying themselves (maybe a little too much), and there were even boaters and cliff jumpers. It can be slippery and I would not recommend it for swimming–there is no sand, only natural rock walls. There is an area right at the front, though, where you can see the sunset without going further down.
