The concept of a “god” is nowhere near universal, and it's a fundamental error of anthropology to ascribe familiar labels to unfamiliar concepts – though it makes it easier for us to breach cultural barriers, it produces the illusion of understanding by erasing the unique traits of the unfamiliar in the process of likening it to the familiar. As such, it is important to understand that Pele is a kupua, not a god – except when she IS a god, because nobody can agree.
