Leonard’s has been mentioned twice on the new PI. the most recent was when Magnum and Higgins played tennis and the loser had buy @ Leonard’s.
Local fixture since 1952 for malasadas (Portuguese donuts), breads, pastries & other sweets.
Address: 933 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816, United States
Malasadas called Portuguese Fried Dough came to Hawaii with Portuguese immigrant workers.
The day before Lent, is Malasada Day in Hawaii. Being predominantly Catholic, Portuguese immigrants would need to use up all their butter and sugar prior to Lent. They did so by making large batches of malasadas, which they would subsequently share with friends from all the other ethnic groups in the plantation camps.
Leonard’s is a Hawaiian icon among locals. This location is walking distance from Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, HI. I had the Haupia Malasada. This was coconut cream filled and heavenly. I had it on the balcony of the Park Shore Hotel overlooking Waikiki Beach. The hotel supplied the Hawaiian coffee. Hawaii has some of the best coffee beans in the world. Kona coffee from the big island is the best coffee I have ever had. #
