This hapa haole song (Hawaiian style music with English words) was written in 1936 by Harry Owens, Royal Hawaiian Hotel Orchestra band leader, and was broadcast over the radio airwaves on the program of the same name. Born in Nebraska, Owens blended Hawaiian music and mainland ballads to produce a new sound called hapa haole music which was developed by Sonny Cunha and Johnny Noble. Few individuals gave Hawaiian music more exposure in the 20th century than Harry Owens with his compositions, records, support of Hawaiian musicians, and the radio program Hawaii Calls.
