This traditional Hawaiian song tells the true story of the ship Makee floundering on the reef off Kauai, discovered there by the ship Malulani. A well-known steersman, Hailama, was called to steer the Makee off the reef, which he did, but the ship was too badly damaged and sank. Several versions of this song were published in 1903, one with eight verses. This arrangement has some of the most popular verses that hula dancers use today.
