This traditional Hawaiian party song was composed by King David under his pen name “Figgs” in 1888 and published by Charles E. King in 1916. Known as the Merrie Monarch for his love of Hawaiian music and hula, Kalakaua also promoted playing the new instrument introduced by the Portuguese in 1879 that evolved into the ‘ukulele. This arrangement includes words from another song that is often sung together with Koni Au I Ka Wai and omits the additional verses from the original song.
