This Hawaiian song compares a loved one to the fragrant lily flower found in the forests. Published in 1916, the song was written by Alfred Alohikea (1884-1936), best known as the composer laureate of Kauai where he spent most of his life. A handsome ladies’ man, Alohikea often sailed between the islands to trade fish and taro. As the story goes, there was a “lily” on each of the islands waiting for him. According to Honolulu Magazine’s issue The 50 Greatest Songs, Pua Lilia is considered to be one of Hawaii’s most erotic love songs.
