This popular song was born during the Civil War and grew to be one of the greatest. Expecting the Civil War to end earlier than it did, America’s great bandmaster Patrick Gilmore (under the pseudonym Louis Lambert), wrote the song in 1863 in preparation for the Peace Jubilee in Boston. The song was first heard in 1869 at the Jubilee and then used at both World Wars and in between. Today the song remains popular.
