The English lyrics to this traditional Christmas carol were adapted from the original German lyrics of Joseph Mohr, sometime during 1792-1848. As the story goes on Christmas Eve in 1818 in a village in the Austrian alps, Mohr, a catholic priest wrote down some words for the season. The church pipe organ was broken so the organist Franz Gruber wrote a tune to those words. That evening at the midnight service, “Silent Night” was heard for the first time. This arrangement uses the first most popular of three original verses, plus a verse translated in Hawaiian by Stephen and Mary Desha.
