Story Behind the Song | Auld Lang Syne | by Ukulele Mele - lanikai-beach.net

Mele Fong aka Ukulele Mele tells the story behind the holiday song Auld Lang Syne. The song is one of America’s three top songs of all time, after Happy Birthday and For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow. An ancient Scottish folk song, it began with Britain’s King Charles 1 who reigned from 1625-1649, at which time the expression “auld lang syne” was popular. Several poems used this expression, and some were set to music. During the 1790s, the song entered America along with the mass immigration from the British Isles. Today, “Auld Lang Syne” is the theme song of New Year’s Eve and other sentimental celebrations.
