This old American song was written by Percy Montross in 1883 when vaudeville first began in Boston and New York's Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public. Free homesteads out west were still attracting people to make the trek across the nation. A San Francisco art colony enjoyed the song, and then it quickly spread to colleges and to the fun-loving public. This arrangement uses the first four of eight published verses in Theodore Ralph's The American Song Treasury, 1964.
