This traditional Hawaiian song is one of the few that is also popular as an instrumental. Originally copyrighted as “Maui, Wrapt in Verdue” in 1899 by Charles K. Hopkins, the song is also popular as “Maui Chimes,” a standard for steel guitar and slack key players.
In 1942, Charles E. king claimed copyright for his version of Samuel Kapu's “Maui no Ka ‘Oi” with subtitle “The Maui Song.” Although the words and music are the same, the translation is different. The second verse tells of the land of low sky which refers to Hana because of the heavy, pouring rain. The sparkling waters refer to the legend of a chief searching for his wife whom he believed was unfaithful. He found her hiding at Waianapanapa Cave.
