This Hawaiian song was composed by Samuel Kuahiwi in 1928 and pays tribute to Hawaii's departed chiefs. The song tells two famous sayings. The first saying is Kamehameha the Great's Law of the Splintered Paddle that guaranteed safe passage for women, children, and the infirm. The second saying is Kamehameha III's statement that became Hawaii's motto. This arrangement uses the first two verses sung twice and omits the third verse found in the original composition.
