This hapa haole song (Hawaiian style music with English words) is a fun song about Waikiki Beach, once the playground for Hawaiian royalty. Published in 1915, the song was first performed at the Pan-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco and became the best seller of all Hawaiian songs. It made Waikiki famous and ushered in Hawaii's early tourism industry as people wanted to be where the song was all about. More than 17 million people visited the seven-month exposition that celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal. The Hawaii pavilion featured a hula show and was the first time Americans heard the ‘ukulele and Hawaiian music being played outside of the Hawaiian Islands.
