This hapa haole song (Hawaiian style music with English words) is a fun song from the 1920s. The song was composed by Richard Whiting and Gus Kahn and published in 1925. American female singer and radio performer Vaughn De Leath (1894-1943) known for her crooning style of singing, was the first to make the song popular. The Paul Whiteman Orchestra, a popular dance band of the 1920s, recorded the song. Singer, actress, and comedian Bette Midler (born December 1, 1945) first performed the song live in 1997 during a TV special as a tribute to her hometown in the Hawaiian Islands.
