Experience a “Sing-Along with Mele Fong” class as Mele on ukulele and husband Rich on u-bass led students in playing Hawaii Aloha with Morse code Strum as the song lyrics and ukulele chords were projected on the large screen at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better on maui. We sang the song once and learned the story behind the song in keeping with Hawaiian oral history traditions.
Hawaii Aloha, one of Hawaii's most important songs, was written by a missionary in the 1800s at the request of a king. As the story goes, King Kamehameha IV loved the music from a Scottish hymn titled “I Left it All with Jesus” written in the 1840s by Pennsylvania singer and composer James MCGranahan. In fact, the king loved the music so much that he asked missionary Reverend Lorenzo Lyons to rewrite the words and place the new song in a Hawaiian hymnal, where it remains today. Reverend Lyons also known as Makua Laiana, had a church for many years in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii (also known as Hawaii Island). His song Hawaii Aloha is also known as Kuu One Hanau. Hawaii Aloha is traditionally sung to close event in Hawaii.
This song was part of the “Sing-Along Hawaiian Party Songs” one-hour class on January 30, 2023, with 17 students signed up.
