From the Andes the road keeps going west, and there is nothing out there for a very long time. Then green cliffs come up out of the Pacific — fluted, almost pleated, dropping straight into jade water, with thin waterfalls running down the folds of them and cloud caught in the valleys. This is about as far from where we started as it is possible to get.
Did you know? People arrived here long before anyone had instruments to arrive with. Polynesian navigators crossed thousands of kilometres of open ocean using no compass, no charts and no clock — they read the rising and setting points of individual stars, the direction of the ocean swells under the hull, the flight paths of birds, and the colour of the light on the underside of clouds, which changes over land. They knew where an island was before they could see it.
And the guitar in this hour has its own crossing. In the 1800s Mexican cowboys were brought over to work cattle on these islands, and they left guitars behind. Nobody here had been taught the standard tuning, so they simply loosened the strings until the open chords rang the way they wanted. That is what slack key means — kī hōʻalu, “loosen the key.” An instrument that arrived from somewhere else and got retuned into something local.
Twelve pieces. This is the steadiest hour on the channel — the least jumpy in volume of anything made so far.
