Pua ‘Olena is a Hawaiian song written James Kaholokula who was a member of the 100th Infantry Battalion, B Company and earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star during World War II. The song tells of the ‘olena blossom which hides under the thickness of its own leaves, emerging to be seen only briefly during its flowering span, then returning to sleep in the forest of Hanalei, Kauai.
