Mele Fong & her husband Richard Tom – The Hawaiian Serenaders – sing & play a medley of Hawaiian songs about the love of parents for their daughter on ukulele & u-bass over photos of family celebrations in Hawaii (words below). #playuke #hawaiianmusic
Mele’s arrangement of the medley is in G with 2 Waltz Strums modulating to C with a picking strum for ‘ukulele.
He Punahele No Oe was written by Albert Nahale’a as a love song from parent to child. Pua Mae ‘Ole was written by John Kamana. In 1933 Kamana wrote the music as he watched his young daughter play in the water in Waikiki. Later in 1954 Kamana wrote the poetry when he visualized her running up from the water, blossoming from a small child into a beautiful grown woman.

(HE PUNAHELE NO OE)
He Punahele no oe, na ka makua You are one so favored
Pulama ia me oe, me ke aloha By the parents
He wahine ui, a he pua nani You have been held dear
Ma kuu poli mai oe, kuu lei With great affection
You are a beautiful lady, pride of my heart
You were a beautiful baby, right from the start
You’re so sweet and lovely, like a pretty flower
Close to my bosom I’ll hold you, baby mine, baby mine.
