Uwehi Ami and Slide (Ukulele Explosions on Maui) | Hawaiian Music by Ukulele Mele - lanikai-beach.net

Fong & her husband Richard Tom – The Serenaders – sing & play and on & u-bass over photos of events where we supported an intermediate school ukulele band (words below). #playuke #hawaiianmusic

Mele’s arrangement of Uwehi Ami and Slide is in F with I Wanna Chuck Strum for ‘ukulele.

This song was written Teresa Bright and Steve Mai’i in 1986. The hapa haole song (Hawaiian style with English lyrics) won the composers the 1986 Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Song of the Year. Our arrangement blends an instrumental interlude of Glenn Miller’s In the Mood from 1939 and other riffs.

1. Down from the valley to the beach at Kahului
Everybody’s listening to a beat that’s new to me
Sounds like a hula in the rock ‘n’ roll style
Don’t know what it is but it sure sounds wild
Turned to my honey “Hey honey, what’s that?”
He says, “Uwehi ami and slide.”

Chorus:
Uwehi ami and slide, uwehi ami and slide
Uwehi ami and slide, uwehi ami and slide
Wo wo wo wo, wo wo wo, wo wo

2. She’s a little girl from the Hana side
Her momma only taught her how to hula glide
Went to a party down in Kahului
Never heard the song about “Louie Louie”
While everyone was dancing to the rock ‘n’ roll
She would uwehi ami and slide. (instrumental interlude)

Don’t be lazy don’t be shy
To do a hula movement that will catch my eye
Lift your heels off the floor
And do the ami ami and slide for more. (Repeat chorus)

3. You kui to the left and you kui to the right
Kaholo in the middle you can do it all night
You go around the island with your hands on your hips
You do the oochie coochie, snap your fingertips
Sophisticated hula maidens they do it too
A little oni oni and a ku ku ku. (Repeat chorus softly)

Hana hou and here we go. (Repeat chorus loudly)
End.
