The pillboxes along Kaiwa Ridge are World War II era military lookouts. Today they’re one of the most popular short hikes on Oahu, known for sunrise views over the Mokulua Islands (locals call them “the Mokes”) and Kailua Bay. Below the ridge, Lanikai Beach is regularly ranked among the best beaches in the United States.
If you’re planning a visit: the Lanikai Pillbox trail is short but steep, and sunrise is the most popular time to go. Lanikai has no public parking lot, so many visitors park in Kailua and walk or bike in.
